Damn, I Need To Read More
Joe Hill continues to impress me with every story of his that I read. I feel confident in saying he is as talented, if not more so, than his bestselling father. But he definitely has his father's tone, making a dark supernatural event feel entirely commonplace, while hanging a lingering shroud of mystery overhead.
Horns follows Ignatius "Ig" Perrish from the moment he wakes up hungover with no memory of the night before, and a new set of horns adorning his temples. Within a few paragraphs, Ig learns the horns aren't just decoration. They give him power over others. Power to see the depraved pasts of those he touches, and the strength of will to proffer just about anyone their deepest, most sinful desires.
Again, this is Joe Hill we're talking about, and while a driving force in the story, the horns are not what made this such a fantastic read. It was Ig. He drove this tale as we swiftly learned he is the son and brother of famous musicians, who many believe aided him in covering up the murder of his beloved girlfriend Merrin Williams a year prior. But Ig didn't do it. Or so he says. We want to believe him despite his physical affliction. After all Ig was always considered a good guy.
But now he doesn't care about good and evil. Every person he touches reveals to him their depraved inner workings and their darkest secrets; some of which slowly begin to reveal what really happened to Merrin on the night of her death.
This is where I'll drop my only negative critique—the story walks separate timelines that will eventually collide in brilliant fashion. But this does make for some mundane and contemporary scenes that dragged on. However, in hindsight, revealed so much.
All that to say, I love a good story that examines Lucifer's fall and his relationship with humanity. In that regard, and so many others, Horns delivers.
