Good Stories That Broke A Reading Slump...

The Sundowner's Dance ends up being one of the better adaptations of mental health disorders into a nightmarish horror premise - in this case, specifically, dementia - that I have ever encountered.

Yes, the disorder is real to the story, and no this tale is not about Alzheimer's or Dementia, instead it is about how a cosmic entity hangs over a quiet and sleepy little retirement community, and how this eldritch being uses the mortals below as its emissaries. The fortunate beneficiaries obtain particular gifts that, when taken away, cause the body to mimic a handful of symptoms and disorders, we might associate with the aging, mental state of the characters.

And the newest member of the community has just moved in. Jerry Campbell, recently widowed, thinks this will be the secluded neighborhood where he can crawl into isolation and wait out his remaining days. Though, that becomes difficult when all manner of seen and unseen visitors begin paying him a trip throughout the nights.

Jerry may not be able to suffer the intrusive visitors and the constant praising of their goddess, but if he does, maybe he can prevent the sinister side-effects from consuming the residents of Fairview Acres before it's too late.

Swears. Up and down swear words about the ending of this one.

The pacing is top-notch, and for the first time, I feared turning the page more often than I excitedly flipped them in anticipation of what I would encounter next.

It was a terrifyingly dreadful read, and I loved every bit of the palpable anxiety throughout its break-neck pacing.

The Sukuna-Gojo battle ramps up with far greater consequences rearing their ugly head in a back-and-forth slug fest that could cripple either individual at any second, while the rest of our cast is stuck watching alongside the readers as the battle and its repercussions unfold.

Absolutely loved this one, but damn.

That ending.
